IF THE STARS ARE KINDLED
So it must be very needful, if the stars are lit above,
And for some reason Santa harnesses his reindeer, full of love,
Somewhere in Veliky Ustyug Ded Moroz sits in his sleigh,
And a daring troika races through the snow-rainbow way.
DAD AS DED MOROZ TO MY SON DENIS
The clock will strike twelve times tonight,
With garlands in their festive glow,
And in the fireworks’ brilliant light,
My grand appearance I will show.
Enveloped in a frosty cloud,
I’ll come out to my son from the hall,
In my bathrobe, not a fur coat proud,
But like Ded Moroz, standing tall.
And a beard, and a red nose so bright,
A staff in tinsel shining clear,
I’ve brought a bag of gifts tonight,
For all the children’s wondering cheer.
I hurry to congratulate them all,
While children still are wide awake,
To hear their poems, big and small,
And give the gifts for goodness’ sake.
Then I’ll congratulate the grown-ups too,
And wet my moustache in champagne sweet,
Saying goodbye for a year, it’s true,
And hurry to the friends down the street.
And when I’ve shed Ded Moroz’s dress,
And hurried home without a trace,
My son will say with bright impress —
Ded Moroz was visiting our place!
